Description

The "Fintail" was a series of luxury vehicles produced by Mercedes-Benz from 1959 to 1968 under the W111 chassis code. Though never officially designated as such, the cars gained the nickname because of the distinctive rear-end which incorporates small tail fins, thought to be an understated attempt to appeal to the United States market at the time. The Fintail is considered part of the lineage of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class flagship model, particularly the initial 6-cylinder W111 and more luxurious W112 models. A special version was made for the US market from 1960 to 1964, the front headlamps were "stacked" to meet US lighting requirements giving the car a unique look. The Fintail models were pioneers of the automotive safety feature of crumple zones, which absorb the energy of a collision. The idea for crumple zones came from Bela Barenyi who worked as an engineer for Mercedes-Benz. This particular '64 220SE came to us from a die hard Mercedes hobbyist who's collection includes over 20 vintage Mercedes' ranging from 1962 to 1995 model years along with 10 other classics. This is an all original car with the exception of one repaint that was done approximately three years ago. Because of the originality of this car, the owner was using it as a model for another ground up restoration he was doing on a similar car. The repaint on this vehicle is nearly perfect, showing very few blemishes, finished in a beautiful dark gray metallic this car is absolutely magnificent. There are no dings or dents anywhere on the exterior of the car with the exception of one small bubble to the top of the passenger side front fender behind the headlight. This spot is less then 1/8" in diameter. All the chrome on the vehicle is in great shape, showing no pitting or blemishes of any sort, and all the chrome retains fantastic luster and shine as does the stainless trim going around the car. Both door shut tight with good gaps. The red leather interior is in great shape showing only light signs of wear but still retains supple leather and no rips or tears anywhere. The interior is all original apart from an aftermarket radio installed in the dashboard, with a 6-Disc changer installed in the trunk of the vehicle. All the lights, blinkers, and horn work on this car, as well as all of the gauges. The only gauge that is not currently working is the fuel gauge. This vehicle is also equipped with an aftermarket alarm system. This is an original A/C car but the components have been disconnected and are all currently in the trunk. The compressor does spin and is not frozen. The car is equipped with a 2.2L inline six cylinder engine with mechanical fuel injection, matched up to a 4-speed manual transmission. There is some play in the shifter and will need new bushings. The car runs well and idles smoothly, it has recently received a new head gasket, valve job and a fuel filter. The car is equipped with power steering and brakes, it also has front disc brakes. There is some slipping of the clutch which will need attention sometime in the near future. The underside of the vehicle shows no rust or rot that we have found. The VIN # is 11102110021781 and it is being sold on a clean, mileage exempt Oklahoma title. The odometer currently reads 73,249 miles which is said to be original for the car. This is a wonderfully driving piece of German craftsmanship that is sure to give the new owner much enjoyment.
