Description

The Bentley Mark VI was the first post-war luxury car from Bentley. Produced from 1946 to 1952, it was also the first car from Rolls-Royce with factory coachwork but chassis were still supplied to independent coach builders. The chassis and engine went on to be used as the basis of those in the Rolls-Royce Silver Wraith of 1946 and Silver Dawn of 1949. The factory bodies were made by Pressed Steel Ltd of Coventry and sent to the Bentley works at Crewe for painting and fitting out with traditional wood and leather. They featured rear hinged "suicide" doors at the front and a sliding sunroof. The Mark VI was introduced at a time of steel shortage across Europe which translated into a desperate shortage of new cars for sale on the UK market. A Used Car report in 1951 of a three year old example with 10,450 miles (16,815 kilometers) on the odometer noted that a car which had, when new, retailed for 4,038 Euros including sales taxes, was now offered for sale at 5,335 Euros. This was seen as a comment on the quality of the car but also on the continuing shortage of cars for saleThis car is a very solid example that was purchased out of a collection in Texas where it has been for the last several years. The car has just gone through a complete engine rebuild and runs great. The paint on the car is older but looks good overall. The only major imperfection is to the passenger side front fender where the paint has been rubbed off (see photos). The front bumper is in very good condition with no pitting or damage showing. The rear bumper does have a small crease in the center. The body on the car is very solid with all of the doors shutting tight and with ease. Inside, the leather upholstery looks great. The seats are nearly perfect with no wear showing. The wool carpet is equally as nice and was replaced during the restoration along with the door panels and headliner. All of the wood inside looks great with no cracking or damage. The picnic tables in the rear are equally as nice and retract into the back of the seats with no problems. The rear window does have a roll up shade. The Mark VI used an F-head straight-6 engine 4.3 L (4257 cc/259 in) in size. A four speed synchromesh manual transmission was fitted with the change lever to the right of the driver on right hand drive cars and on the column on left hand drive versions. The 4.3 L was referred to as the 41/4 L with a single exhaust and the 4.6 L as the 41/2 L with a twin exhaust. The motor has recently gone through a complete rebuild and runs great. The engine is nicely finished and very original. On the road, the car runs out very well and has plenty of power. The underside of the car is solid with no rot that we have seen. It has been undercoated to prevent any rust in the future. Whether you want the car for the family, collection or you're limousine fleet, it is sure to bring enjoyment. The current mileage shows 26,496 and the VIN number is B246PV.
