Description

The 1971-1975 "Ascona" Sedan, Wagon and "Sport Wagon," were imported as upgraded replacements for the earlier Opel Kadett models. The "Ascona" is the correct Opel name for these models, although the parts and sales books first identified these vehicles as the Opel "1900," based on the fender and trunk lid "1900" badges. Although some Ascona's were upgraded for higher performance, most Ascona's were driven as commuter vehicles, and very few are around today. Even fewer are found with the miles as this particular car has. With only 34,242 miles, this could possibly be the lowest mileage Opel in existence. The gentleman that we purchased the car from has known the car since the day it was purchased here in Missouri. The original owner drove the car sparingly for the first 18 years before his untimely passing. The car was then put away in storage for the next 20 years, being driven and started sparingly. When it finally did come out of storage, the gas tank was removed and boiled out, the carburetor was rebuilt, a new battery was installed, brakes were all gone through and new tires were installed. During the time it was stored the car was taken out or started on a monthly basis and sometimes weekly during the spring and summer. When it was, everything was written down in two small notebooks that come with the car. Starting October 25th, 1996 the owner started documenting everything that was done with the car. She even documented how easy the car was to start, what the weather was like and where she went! For example March 4th, 1997 the car was easy to start because it was a warm day. But on March 7th, "Harder to start then the other day (cooler)". June 8th of 1997 the car was taken to church. Then on the 28th the owner was hungry and took the car to McDonalds! August 19th was a wet, damp day and it took several try's to get the car started. The exterior is all original with no paint work ever being done. While not perfect, it does show very well for being 39 years old. Both bumpers look great and have a good shine to them with no damage that we have seen. The rubber and weather stripping around the windows is original but is showing its age with some cracking around the glass. All the glass is in good condition with no cracks or major chips to be found. Inside, the seats and carpet are both in great condition with no major. The only notable imperfection to the inside of the car is to the rear storage trays under the back, side windows. They do show some cracking and weathering as you can see in the photos. The dash is solid as well as the steering wheel which shows no cracking. The black carpet and dash shows great with the white seats and headliner. All lights, blinkers, horn and wipers work with no issues, like a 34,000 mile car should. All Ascona's, including the 2-door sedan, the 4-door sedan, and the station wagon versions, shared the same 1.9 liter driveline with the 1971-1975 Opel Manta. The 1.9 liter four cylinder is a great little motor that gives this little two door wagon plenty of power. Under the hood the motor is vey clean and looks as clean as it did when it rolled off the showroom floor. The only mechanical issue we have found is that the gas gauge is currently inoperable. The underside is as clean as the top. There is some or the original undercoating peeling off a bit in some places but otherwise the underbody looks great with no signs of rust. VIN number is 549497798 and the current mileage shows 34,243 which is actual. The car is being sold on a clean Missouri title.
