Description

The 3000 Mk III was launched in October 1963, and remained in production until the end of 1967 when production of Austin-Healeys finally ceased. Classified as the BJ8, the new model was the most powerful and luxurious of the big Healeys, with a walnut-veneer dash, wind up windows, and a 150 hp engine. Improvements to the engine included a new camshaft and valve springs, and twin SU 2" HD8 carburetors, together with a new design of exhaust system. Servo-assisted brakes were now fitted as standard. Only 2+2 seat versions were made. Option extras were similar to those offered for the MkII, the main change being that the standard interior trim was now Ambla vinyl, with leather seats being added to the list of options. In May 1964 the Phase II version of the MkIII was released, which had a modified rear chassis to allow more rear ground clearance to be increased, and subsequently, in March 1965 the car also gained separate indicators. This particular BJ8 is a true, one owner vehicle that was bought new in Cincinnati, Ohio. The gentleman we purchased the car from rarely drove it and was mainly used by his three daughters driving back and forth from high school in the summer. Once the three girls graduated, the car went through a full cosmetic restoration where $30,000 was spent in parts and labor. The interior is still all original and has never been touched. The car was used sparingly there after and still shows nicely today. With only 82,000 miles, the car is a fantastic example of a last year Healey. The exterior of the car is finished in Colorado Red, which is an original color for the car with a black soft top. The paint looks great and has no major imperfections to be found. The body is very solid with no major spots of filler anywhere on the car. All of the chrome and stainless on the car appears to be original and in very good condition. Only some very minor pitting is found on the bumpers and trim. The stainless does have some minor scratches. Inside, the interior is said to be all original for the car. Both seats are in excellent condition with no major wear showing to either. Carpets, door panels and dash all show nicely as well with no major wear. There is some minor cracking to the finish on the dash which is common for these cars. The wood is still in very good, solid condition with no splits. All gauges are in good working order as well as the lights, blinkers, horn and wipers. Under the hood, the original six cylinder runs great and very strong. With electronic overdrive, the car is a pleasure to drive, even at highway speeds. Connected to the 4 speed manual transmission these cars are a ton of fun to drive. The clutch is strong and transmission shifts with no problems. The engine bay is very clean and shows well. The underside of the car is very clean and has been painted to match the rest of the exterior. The floors are solid as well as the frame and supports. This is a very solid example of an original Austin Healey BJ8. The current mileage shows 82,900 and VIN number is HBJ8L39095.
