Description

In 1936, Hudson revamped its cars, introducing a new "radial safety control" / "rhythmic ride" suspension which suspended the live front axle from two steel bars, as well as from leaf springs. Doing this allowed the use of longer, softer leaf springs ("rhythmic ride"), and prevented bumps and braking from moving the car off course. The 1936 Hudsons were also considerably larger inside than competitive cars. Hudson claimed a 145-cubic-foot interior, comparing it to 121 cubic feet in the "largest of other popular cars." With the optional bulging trunk lid, the Hudsons could store 21 cubic feet of luggage, though that might have been an optimistic measurement. The 1936 engines were powerful for the time, from 93 hp to 124 hp. The 1939 models joined other American cars in the use of a column-mounted gearshift lever. This freed front-seat passenger space and remained the industry standard through the 1960s, when "bucket seats" came into vogue. The car you are looking at here is one of those rare cars that you get to see only a few times in a lifetime. Not exactly a "barn find" but very close. Since the mid 90's I've been driving past my parent's next door neighbors house seeing this Hudson sitting in the garage. Never really knowing the story behind it, I just thought that it was a disassembled, rusty old car that probably didn't run and didn't look like much. Last summer, the owner of the car passed away from an unexpected heart attack. Last month I finally got to speak with this widow about the car and found out some surprising things. This wasn't just a rusty old car like I thought. It was a 30,000 ORIGINAL mile Hudson 112 that has been in their family its entire life. Not only was it a one family owned, low mileage car, but that it had NO rust on the entire body, floors or inside the trunk. I have not been able to find one spot of rot on this car. Back in 1993 when they purchased the car he had it completely stripped to bare metal. He was preparing it for paint when other things got more important. The car has sat in one spot since then. When we pulled the car out of the garage it was in pieces. The past few weeks, we have been reassembling the car and giving it a good cleaning. We put a battery in it, dropped and cleaned the gas tank, went through all the fluids and tried to start it. Two cranks and the car fired right up after not being ran for over 15 years. It didn't even smoke! There are a few minor things missing on the car that we have found. They include the headliner retainer rings, right rear door handle, right front door lock, taillight lens and the key for the trunk lock. It seems like everything else is there and what's not on the car, is in the trunk. We have all new weather stripping, running boards, rubber and a few other miscellaneous parts and pieces that we decided to not put back on the car to make it easier to paint for the new owner. Inside, the original wood dash looks great with no cracking or fading. All the wood trim around the windows looks great as well as the original steering wheel which shows no splits. All interior lights work as well as the horn. All the glass appears to be new and in great condition. The seats and headliner are both original for the car and do show some wear as you can see in the photos, the most major being to the front seat. Door panels are also original and look very good for their age. Under the hood, the motor is clean and runs out very well. Turn the key and with a push of the button, the car starts right up and runs incredibly smooth. We have not taken the car down the road yet, only driven it around the shop a small bit. As expected, the clutch was frozen when we got it. We did get it freed and it does engage and disengage now which makes the car drivable. A new clutch will probably be needed sometime in the future. All new wheel cylinders were installed as well as a new master cylinder to get the car to stop.As you can see in the photos, the underside of the car is extremely solid with no undercoating ever being applied. We have gone all over this car and couldn't find a single hole from rust. For a project car, you can't ask for them being any better then this. A low, original mileage, solid example that is a clean slate for whatever you want to do. Bring it back to original or make it an awesome, fat fendered Hot Rod. What ever your desire, the car is here for you. The car currently shows 30,156 miles which is said to be original and the VIN number is 903490. It is being sold on a clean Missouri title.
