This two-owner example was made on February 18, 1957, at Fords River Rouge factory in Dearborn, Michigan (VIN Code F). The previous owner reportedly purchased the car in November 1976. Both owners lovingly cared for this car as it has been fastidiously maintained and stored during its nearly 65 years since built. This original E Bird still retains its FINAL OK Ford #504 inspection stamp and its original factory inspection stamps at the firewall #288 and driver side door jam #477! Even though it was inspired by and competed for sales against the Chevrolet Corvette, by 1957, Fords Thunderbird was well on its way to creating a new class of vehicle the personal luxury car. It was one of 21,380 T-Birds made in 1957. By then, one could get a T-Bird with automatic windshield washers, a Dial-O-Matic power seat with fore-aft, up-down memory and a radio with volume that rose as engine speed increased. Under its forward-hinged hood is the original optional 272HP 312 CID Y-block V-8 engine with its original original EJC 9510 Holley carbs (VIN Code E) and a 9.7:1 compression ratio. It bolts up to its original three-speed manual transmission and a 3.56:1 rear end. Other driver convenience features on this T-Bird include reverse lights, heater, defroster, Town & Country signal-seeking radio, tinted glass, engine dress-up kit and a telescopic steering wheel. Dressed in Thunderbird Bronze (code Q), the cars paint and trim are in overall excellent order, the body is straight, the engine bay is extremely tidy (even still has its See-Clear windshield washer bag), the cargo area is in great shape and the rear trunk padding and quarter boards are all original and in excellent original condition. The original chrome bumpers shine brilliantly. The car has the matching fiberglass hardtop with side windows and theres also the original soft-top, which has never been installed, please see photos. This bird rolls on newer Firestone Deluxe Champion wide whitewalls, size 7.50-14. Each tire is mounted on a steel wheel topped by a factory wheel cover. The wheels and tires are all in very good order, including the spare tire in the trunk, with a jack. Inside, theres the original bronze interior with pleated vinyl bench seat (code XJ). The seat is in excellent condition, the matching carpet is in very good order, with a white headliner on the inside of the hardtop to provide some neutral tones. A three-spoke steering wheel faces the driver and is ready for adventure. The new-for-57 instrument panel and inner door panels are all in very good condition. A floor-mounted shift lever and a factory AM radio complete the interior but the wipers are inoperable. For the 1957 model year, the front bumper was reshaped, the grille and tailfins were made larger and larger taillights were fitted. The spare tire moved back inside the trunk, which had been redesigned to allow it to be mounted vertically. The side Thunderbird script was moved from the fins to the front fenders. A new option was Dial-O-Matic four-way power seat that would move rearward when the ignition was turned off to allow easier exit and entry. Competition to this Thunderbird in 1957 included Chevrolets Corvette, Ferraris 250 GT, Jaguars XK-140 and Mercedes-Benzs 300 SL. There are not many first-generation Thunderbirds remaining and special models like this one are getting harder and harder to locate. If youre in the market for a Special Bird of a Feather, you couldnt go wrong with this factory hot rodded Thunderbird E-Code. Come by MotoeXotica Classic Cars today and check it out!
