Description

The PV444 and the PV544 was made by Volvo from 1947 to 1965. Beginning with the PV444 series, this was Volvo's first uni-body car they ever produced. Powered by a 1.4 liter 4 cylinder producing 40 horsepower the car was a roomy gas saver that was still fun to drive. In 1958, the PV544 was phased in as the PV444 was ending its run. Subtle differences with the PV444 included the introduction of a curved one-piece windshield to replace the two panes of flat glass, a larger backlight, and a ribbon-type speedometer. The 444's 3-speed manual transmission was also supplanted by a 4-speed unit in the 544.The next significant change occurred in 1962, when the B16 engine was replaced by Volvo's new B18 engine that was initially developed for the P1800 sports car, introduced the previous year. This 1.8 L engine had five main bearings. Again single and twin carburetor versions were offered, designated B18A and B18D, respectively. The U.S. market saw very few B18A cars since the United States' public would rather have performance over fuel economy. Also in 1962, Volvo changed from 6- to 12-volt electrical systems. The 544 received incremental mechanical revisions and trim changes until its final production year of 1965. Exactly 440,000 units were built during the 18-year run. The car had so endeared itself to its owners that Volvo ran self-deprecating advertisements in late 1965 and early 1966 imploring PV owners not to be angry with the company. This particular car came out of Los Angeles where it was owned by the same father and son for 45 years. The father bought the car in 1964, used. The son, now in his 70's inherited the car and garaged it. About 8 years ago he began a restoration on the car. During that restoration the car was resprayed white, new glass was installed in the front and back with new rubber gaskets. The paint on the car is not perfect, but is in very good condition. Both bumpers were rechromed during this time as well as the front grill. All of which looks great. There turn signal lenses are both new as well as the Lucas mirrors. Inside, the seats have all been recovered and look great. The carpet, padding, headliner, door panels and dash pad are all newer and in very good condition with no major wear showing. All lights and blinkers work with no problems as well as the horn. The wiper motor works but the wipers are currently not hooked up. The steering wheel does have some cracking under the leather cover. Mechanically, this car is in great running and driving condition. The original motor has been replaced with a larger B20 4 cylinder that has gone through a recent rebuild with new rings, oil pump, spark plugs, thermostat and housing all being installed. With it's new dual SU carb set up, the car has plenty or power and runs very smooth. The four speed manual transmission shifts fine and the clutch both feel strong. The suspension has also been updated with new shocks all around, new torque rod bushings and lower A arm bushings. New transmission mounts, damper bands on the transaxle and drive shaft hanger bushings were also installed. All of this makes the car ride down the road very smooth and handle like new. The exhaust is also new from the manifold back. Underneath, the car is very solid with no rot that we have seen. Being in California for almost all of its life, rust was never an issue for this little car. This is a great running little Volvo that is rarely seen in this nice of a condition. The current mileage on the car shows 22,888 and the VIN number is 389277. The car is being sold on a clean, California title.
