Description

Conceived as a baby Cadillac with a bit more added style, the La Salle series was introduced on March 5, 1927. To present a youthful, dashing image completely opposite from the staid and proper Cadillac, the La Salle series was meant to be a stepping stone in a perceived gap between Cadillac and Buick in GM's lineup. Priced just above the Buick, the La Salle was designed to be a complete model line that would adequately fill out GM's product roster. The name La Salle was chosen in reference to the famed French explorer that Cadillac had been named after, as one of his compatriots. In 1939 LaSalle finally beat the Packard 120 in sales for the first time. The only problem was that GM was a much bigger company then Packard and its management had much bigger expectations. In this light, LaSalle's 1939 model year volume of some 22,000 units was judged sub par so the decision was made to cancel the LaSalle after the 1940 model run. This particular 1940 Series 50 has benefited from a complete frame up restoration to bring it up to the high quality you see today. This stock looking LaSalle is just that until you take a closer look under the hood where you will find a more modern, and reliable, 350 Cu In V8 with power steering, brakes and A/C that blows cold. The front end has been modified to accept a newer, Camaro front suspension that comes with disc brakes. The paint on the car is nearly perfect and is finished in a base coat / clear coat. Both front and rear chrome bumpers are in excellent condition with no pitting or dents. All the trim and bright work around the car is equally as nice with no damage showing to any of it. From the outside, this is a completely stock looking car that has great lines and the classic suicide door look. This is a very solid body with no previous damage that we have found. All the glass is in good condition with no cracks or chips. Inside, the seats have been refinished in high quality vinyl that looks great and shows no imperfections. The door and kick panels have also been finished in the same quality material that looks great. Carpet is new as well as the headliner which is professionally upholstered. The dash is the original style wood grain but has been updated with VDO Classic Gauges that all work with no problems. There has also been an updated Alpine AM/FM/CD player installed that works great. During restoration they tried to stay as original as possible inside this car and it shows. The steering wheel is the original style for the car but has been put on a tilt column with a classic style column shifter. The under dash A/C unit works with no problems and blows cold. Under the hood, there has been a rebuilt 350 Cu In V8 installed with 4bbl carb. The front end is out of a Camaro and has been modified to fit under the car. With power disc brakes, this car is a joy to drive and is extremely smooth going down the road. The 350 transmission goes back to a 10 bolt rear end with gearing that suits the car fine for the high way. The underside of the car is extremely solid with no rot that we have found. The frame is solid as are the front and rear floors. The original style wheels are covered in LaSalle hubcaps that all look great. The white wall tires are new all the way around and are bias plys. The current mileage on the car shows just over 700 and this is since the complete restoration. The VIN number is 4330222.
