It was code-named "R107" inside Mercedes during the production phase.Due to federal fuel economy standards in other parts of the world, many other countries did not receive the 500 SL until a year after Europe. The 560 SL model was for sale in U.S., Japan, Canada and Australia. Though the 5.6 liter engine of the 560 SL was larger, the 500 SL is recorded as being the fastest SLs made.
