Description

The President Speedster seen here was Studebaker's top-of-the-line model in 1955, meant to stop the sales slide of the 1953-'54 models. Besides the new-for-1955 bumpers, the President Speedster was available with six two-tone and two three-tone paint schemes, with changing availability throughout the year. Fourteen early Presidents were dispatched around the country to drum up consumer interest in the redesign. The Speedster's list price started at $3,253, or about $800 more than a base 1955 President State hardtop. That said, the 1955 President Speedster was loaded with standard equipment including: choice of automatic or overdrive transmissions, power steering and brakes, dual exhaust, a four-barrel carburetor, "Shoemaker-stitched" diamond-quilted genuine top-grain leather seating, carpeting front and rear, a map pocket, an eight-tube radio, a Stewart-Warner 160 mph speedometer and 8,000 rpm tachometer in a striking engine-turned facing, turn signals, electric clock, tinted glass, cigarette lighter, oil filter and oil bath air cleaner, dual backup lamps, triple horns, two-speed electric wipers, tubeless whitewall tires and wire wheel covers, fog-light bumperettes, stainless roof band, specific trim including a hood-length hood ornament, Speedster nameplates and checkered emblems, and chrome-plated ashtrays, rear-view mirror, moldings and tailpipe extensions. This particular car comes finished in its original two tone colors of "Lemon and Lime". We purchased this rarely seen car from a retired GM executive who had cherished it since 1999 when he purchased it. The paint is in overall good condition but is not perfect. There aren't any major scratches or dents to the body. The car still has a good shine and luster. All the trim and chrome is in good condition with no major dents or scratches. The body is solid with no rot or bubbling that we have found but the doors don't line up perfectly when trying to shut them; 54 year old hinges. Inside, the leather interior is completely new and finished in the original colors and pattern. The seats show no wear as do the carpets or headliner which are both in great condition. All gauges are in good working order except for the tachometer and original clock. All lights, blinkers, AM radio and wipers work with no problems. A high-performance rendition of the Studebaker small-block V-8, now bored out to 259.2 cid, was standard on the 1955 Studebaker President Speedster. This is the original motor in the car and it starts up with no issues or hesitation. On the road the car runs very good with a ton of power. The transmission shifts smooth and performs as it should. Under the hood is very clean and almost all original. Underneath, the car is very solid overall. These cars are notorious for rotting out underneath especially in the rear. The back half of this car is very solid with no rot that we have found. There is some repair to the front floors as well as to the drivers side. The rest of the floors are very solid. The current mileage shows 109,560 and the VIN number is 7167047. The car is being sold on a clean California title.
