The Hudson Motor Car Company made Hudson and other brand automobiles in Detroit from 1909 to '54. The company had a number of firsts for the auto industry; these included dual brakes, the use of dashboard oil-pressure and generator warning lights. It also had the first balanced crankshaft, which allowed the Hudson straight-six engine, dubbed the "Super Six" in 1916, to work at a higher rotational speed while remaining smooth, developing more power for its size than lower-speed engines. The 1929 Hudson was the third-highest selling U.S. car that year. This car was capable of sustained speeds of more than 80 mph, the fastest Detroit-manufactured car that year. Despite being an upper-middle class car in the late 1920s, Hudsons were popular as get-away cars for bank robberies!
