Description

This 1947 Cadillac Series 61 is a 53,000 ORIGINAL mile car that has a fantastic history. The original owner of this car was Mr. Wilbur Dunston from LaPorte Indiana. He was a local barber and owned the car until he passed away in 1964 and the title was placed in his wife's name. Mr. Peter Kesling, then acquired the car and placed it in a museum. We purchased the car from Mr. Kesling. The story of how he got the car is as follows....When Mr. Kesling was in high school, he used to get his hair cut by Wilbur Dunston - the original owner of the car. Mr. Dunston was a black barber in LaPorte, Indiana. His shop was in the basement of a brick building where the Rumely Parking garage is today. When Mr. Dunston initially tried to purchase a Cadillac, his local dealer turned him away because it would "upset his white clients in LaPorte". Because of this, Mr. Dunston had to purchase this car in Indianapolis where he also had to return for service. Upon his death, this car was stored in the garage of his home on Eighteenth street which at that time adjoined his barber shop which is now called "The Brothers Two". Everyday Mr. Kesling drove to his office and glanced at the closed garage door with paper over the windows and wondered what was going to happen to this car. One day he got a call from Jim Keller, a barber friend of Mrs. Dunston, asking if he would be interested in purchasing the car. He asked how much, and made the check out to Mrs. Dunston that night. Since then, the car has been rarely driven and been stored in a museum in Indiana when it was not being driven. The car has been kept in its original form in every way including the sun visor and special "passing mirror" on the drivers side door. The car is still titled in Mrs. Dunston's name on an Indiana title from 1964 when it was put into her name after Mr. Dunston's passing. The paint on the car is in very good, original condition. It does have some scrapes and nicks but is in fantastic condition for being almost 60 years old. The front and rear bumpers look great and have a nice shine to them. The rear bumper does show some scrapes and peeling. All the trim is in great shape along with the glass.
