Description

On May 6, 1928, the Detroit Free Press reported: "Probably no development of the past five years has created so profound a stir in the automobile industry as the current announcement that the new De Soto Six, which will be presented to the public in the next three months, is to be built by Chrysler." With hardly any more information than this, over 500 dealers signed for franchises. Production for the 1929 model began in July, 1928, and official announcement was made at the January, 1929, New York Automobile Show. With the unveiling of De Soto at a price of $845, Walter P. Chrysler now felt that he had closed a marketing gap between Dodge and Chrysler.Initially, Desoto's came with the inline 6 cylinder until the 1930 CF was announced. A new L-head eight-cylinder engine that featured a downdraft carburetor and developed 70 horsepower was unveiled in a new De Soto model whose appearance was noticeably different from the Six. Soon the Eight had established itself for quick get away and tenacious hill climbing ability. This particular car is one of those car's that everybody talk's about finding. It's truly a barn find. Tucked away behind tall weeds and some tree's in Iowa was a small red barn that was just about empty other then a small horse stable, an old aluminum boat and a car over some sheets. That car is what you see here. When uncovered in 2007, it needed little work to get running and was in amazingly good shape. We're not sure how long the car was sitting in this barn, but today it's a running and driving piece of history. The paint on the car was just recently buffed out and has a very good shine and luster. While obviously not perfect, it is in very good condition. The body on the car is very solid with no rot that we have found. There is some peeling and checking to the paint in a few places as expected from a paint job this old. All the door open and shut as they should as does the hood. Front and rear bumpers do show some pitting and some minor peeling to the chrome as you can see in the pictures. Inside, the seats and carpet are both in very good condition with no major wear showing to either. There is some fading, but that is expected for the age. All the gauges are in good working order as well as the lights. Door panels and headliner are all in good condition with no major wear showing. Under the hood, the 8 cylinder runs great. Very strong with tons of torque is a perfect way to describe how the car runs. Pulling itself up a steep incline is no problem and you barely have to use and throttle. Just let off the clutch and the car moves forward with ease. Very impressive for a car of this age. The engine is very clean, but not highly detailed as you can see. It does start up very easily and runs down the road with no problems. The tires do show some dry rot and cracking and are wrapped around wood wheels which are in good condition and solid. The car's VIN number is CF4287 and it is being sold on a clean Iowa title. The current mileage shows 65,935.
