At MotoeXotica Classic Cars, were pleased to present one of those a BMW 840 Ci. This particular example was built on May 4, 1995 in BMWs factory in Dingolfing, Germany. This is only one of 789 copies of the 840 Ci models made in 1995. Finished in Alpine White (code 300), the cars paint and trim are in overall average condition with just a few minor blemishes visible upon close examination. The windows are clear and crack-free while the lights are intact and haze-free. However, the horn and sunroof are inoperable. This cars bodywork is solid and straight and its fully integrated bumpers fit well to the rest of the body. This Bimmer rides on Michelin radials, size 225/55R16 at all four corners. Each tire is wrapped around a factory alloy lace wheel. The tires and wheels are in very good order. Under the hood is BMWs 4.0L DOHC 32-valve V-8 engine (code M60B40), buttoned to a five-speed automatic transmission. Driver convenience features include automatic climate control, power steering, power four-wheel disc brakes, power mirrors, power locks, power windows, power front seats with memory, electric tilt steering column and automatic day/night rear-view mirror. Inside, the cars Light Silvergray (code M5SH) interior is in overall decent condition. The front buckets are in satisfactory condition as are the matching carpet, inner door panels and the headliner. The sunroof and horn are inop. The four-spoke steering wheel is in great condition, as is the instrument panel, center console and the shift lever. Completing the interior is a factory AM/FM stereo. The 840Ci was available with a five-speed automatic transmission, though European cars were given the option of a six-speed manual transmission. The only external features distinguishing the V-8 model from the V12 models were the quad round exhausts, which were square in the V-12 models. The 840Ci stayed in production until May 1999. Almost $1 billion was spent on developing the car. BMW usedcomputer-aided design (CAD) tools, still unusual at the time, to design the car's all-new body. Combined with wind tunnel testing, the resulting car had adrag coefficient of 0.29, a major improvement from the previousBMW 6-series and 635CSis 0.39. The 8 Series offered the first V-12 engine mated to a six-speed manual gearbox on a road car. It was one of the first vehicles to be fitted with an electronic drive-by-wire throttle. The 8 Series was one of BMW's first cars to use a multi-linkrear axle. While CAD modeling allowed the car's unibody to be eight pounds lighter than that of its predecessor, the car was significantly heavier when completed due to the large engine and added luxury itemsa source of criticism from those who wanted BMW to concentrate on the driving experience. Some of the car's weight may have been due to its pillarless hardtop body style, which lacked a B post. Sales of the 8 Series were affected by the global recession of the early 1990s, the Persian Gulf War and energy price spikes. BMW pulled the 8 Series from the North American market in 1997, having sold only 7,232 cars over seven years. BMW continued production for Europe until 1999. The ultimate worldwide production total was 31,062. Competition to this 840 in 1995 included Acuras NSX, Chevrolets Corvette, Dodges Stealth R/T, Fords Thunderbird SC, Hondas Prelude, Jaguars XJS-12, Lexus SC 300, Mazdas RX-7, Mitsubishis 3000GT, Nissans 300ZX and Toyotas Supra. If youre in the market for a grand tourer that needs some TLC, this would make a great choice; or if youre a BMW fan who is looking to add or replace a model in your Ultimate Driving Machine collection, this would be an ideal place to start.
