1929 Ford Model A Roadster South Dakota car Rumble Seat option 201 CID four-cylinder engine Three-speed sliding gear manual transmission Balsam Green exterior with a Parchment top and Saddle interior Yellow wire wheels, including full-size spare tire mounted in rear Ford Model A fans, rejoice because we have another of Henry Fords ladies in house, a 1929 Roadster with rumble seat. This particular example came from South Dakota. It was a heady year for Ford. Nineteen months after launching the Model Ts replacement, Ford built the two-millionth Model A in July 1929. On this particular example, finished in Balsam Green, the paint and trim show in great overall condition, with only minor blemishes visible upon close inspection. The cars glass panels are clear and intact while its lights are haze- and crack-free. This A has solid and straight bodywork, its engine bay is very tidy and its bumpers are in fine shape. The Parchment colored top is in better-than-average condition, considering its age and features a glass rear window. This A rides on wide whitewall tires that surround gorgeous factory yellow wire wheels. A full-size spare tire with its own matching wire wheel rides on the back of the car. Under the veed hood is 201 CID Flathead four-cylinder engine buttoned to a three-speed sliding gear manual transmission. The saddle interior is in very good order, including the bench seat and the instrument panel. In good order are the inner door panels, shift lever and four-spoke steering wheel. Compared to the Model T, the A offered more modern styling (more car and less horseless carriage), four-wheel brakes, better fuel mileage, laminated safety glass in the windshield, hydraulic shock absorbers and came in four exterior colors Niagara Blue, Arabian Sand, Dawn Gray and Gun Metal Blue. The biggest exterior change in 1929 involved the exterior door handles on open models like this one. The Model A was the first Ford to use the standard set of driver controls with conventional clutch and brake pedals, throttle, and gearshift. Previous Fords used controls that had become uncommon to drivers of other makes. The Model A's fuel tank was situated in the cowl, between the engine compartment's fire wall and the dash panel. It had a visual fuel gauge, and the fuel flowed to the carburetor by gravity. A rear-view mirror was optional. In cooler climates, owners could purchase anaftermarketcast iron unit to place over the exhaust manifold to provide heat to the cab. A small door provided adjustment of the amount of hot air entering the cab. The Model A came in a wide variety of styles including aCoupe(Standard and Deluxe), the Business Coupe, Sport Coupe, Roadster Coupe (Standard and Deluxe), ConvertibleCabriolet, ConvertibleSedan, Phaeton (Standard and Deluxe), TudorSedan(Standard and Deluxe), Town Car, Fordor (two-window) (Standard and Deluxe), Fordor (three-window) (Standard and Deluxe), Victoria, Town Sedan, Station Wagon, Taxicab, Truck, and Commercial. Just a few of this Fords many competitors in 1929 included Chevrolets Series AC International and Plymouths Model U. The Model A became the foundation vehicle for hot-rodders and customizers here at home and around the world and it inspired others to create other vehicles to customize as time passed.
