Under the forward-hinged hood is Toyotas 20R 2.2L SOHC four-cylinder engine with aluminum alloy heads and two-barrel carburetor. Backing that motor is a five-speed manual transmission (W50). Driver convenience features include power brakes, discs in front and drums in back. Inside, the cars seats are original and showing there age with tears on both front seats, with the carpet only in fair shape. The headliner is loose. The black instrument panel is in good overall condition and has woodgrain appliqus. The factory four-spoke steering wheel looks okay but the drivers sideview mirror remote is inoperable. The inner door panels are only fair, the mirror glass is in good order, the center console is complete and the shifter is in good order. Completing the interior is an AM/FM stereo with cassette deck and equalizer. The cars clock still works. Displayed at the October 1970Tokyo Motor Show and marketed from December of the same year, the Celica was a two-door hardtop coupe that emphasized styling and driving enjoyment, based on a platform shared with theToyota Carinasedan, which is one size above theToyota Corolla. This car was aimed at the North American market, and was Toyota's response to the 1964Ford Mustang(Pony car), which also was a standard sedan (Ford Falcon) with stylized 2+2 bodywork. Over the generations, the Celica evolved into a sports car. In October 1975, the entire Celica lineup was given a facelift, with a revised front bumper and grille arrangement. The new model was coded RA24 for the American spec with 20R engine. The RA series also had an elongated nose to accommodate the larger engine. The door vents, fuel filler cap, and interior were also different between the TA and RA series. The top-line GT included a five-speedmanual transmission, rocker panel GT stripes, and styled steel wheels with chrome trim rings. Competition to this Toyota in 1977 included Buicks Skyhawk, Chevrolets Vega and Monza, Fords Mustang II, Dodges Colt and Challenger, Oldsmobiles Starfire, Plymouths Sapporo and Pontiacs Sunbird.
