Description

During World War II, the Crosley became attractive because of gasoline rationing and the good mileage (50 miles per gallon). Crosley was the last company to cease production of civilian vehicles in 1942, partly to allow car buyers the opportunity to purchase as many Crosleys as possible to aid in fuel rationing, and partly because the War Production Board needed some time to determine a useful purpose for Crosley's small factories. Post war Crosley sales were great with increases in sales for three consecutive years. Production totaled almost 5000 for '46, more than 19,000 for '47, and close to 29,000 for '48. Powel Crosley grandly predicted 80,000 a year in the near future, but his firm would never do so well again. New postwar designs from other independents and the Big Three, plus a nagging reputation for engine problems, caused '49 volume to tumble below 7500.Seeking to turn things around for 1950, Crosley offered wagon, convertible, and sedan in standard and Super trim, plus the doorless Hotshot and a slightly better-trimmed version called Super Sports, which had conventional doors. Crosley was still in a class by itself on price -- $872-$984 that year -- and for engineering. Disc brakes, for example, had arrived for 1949-50, a first for series production shared with Chrysler's 1950 Town & Country Newport. The 1950 Crosley Super Station Wagon you see here is a very, very special car with a lovely story. 1 of only 4,205 wagons produced in 1950, this Crosley has been meticulously and very carefully rebuilt to extremely high standards by a very special person. That person is Michael Stach. Michael purchased the Crosley shortly before being diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor. However, he did not let his ailment hold him back from finishing the Crosley he started. In fact, the Crosley restoration kept him going! This is a high quality Crosley restoration. Finished in light Green and White, the body is impeccably straight and the paint is absolutely beautiful with no notable imperfections. For the body work, the car was sent to Staatsburg New York for all new paint and floor pans. Any and all exterior imperfections to the body were meticulously repaired, making this gorgeous Crosley a pristine restoration. The paint started with a PPG epoxy primer on the bare metal, continued with a urethane filling primer. The primer was then block sanded, primed again and then wet sanded with 500 grade paper before receiving three coats of single stage PPG urethane paint for both the Palmolive Green & White, wet sanding between each coat. This is a truly, super fine detailed Crosley! The rear door is a single unit which is rare. Most Crosley wagons came with the two, barn style doors. Inside, you will find that the deceptively simple interior is just as amazing as the exterior! The seats are finished in a beautiful red fabric and look incredible. The door panels are also finished in the same fabric and look equally as great. The floor boards are in excellent condition, as well as the headliner. The dashboard looks incredible and the gauges have been restored to their original, simple beauty.Under the hood, you will find a pristine 44 cu in, overhead cam, 4 cylinder engine attached to a 3 speed manual transmission. This small, but capable engine looks beautiful in between the engine bay walls. It is just as clean as the rest of the car. Transferring the power to the ground are a set of original Crosley wheels that look beautiful wrapped snug in brand new 4.60X12" tires, which are ever so slightly larger than the original tires.Very rarely can one find a Crosley of this caliber. Mr. Stach went above and beyond in the restoration of this incredible, yet very small car. The VIN to this Crosley is CD206496 and the current mileage shows 33,616. This Crosley has been featured in Hemmings Motors (November 2005) and comes with a board displaying the car's 6 page article.
