Description

The car was designed by American designer Tom Tjaarda and replaced the De Tomaso Mangusta. Unlike the Mangusta, which employed a steel backbone chassis, the Pantera was a steel monocoque design, the first instance of De Tomaso using this construction technique. The Pantera logo included a version of Argentina's flag turned on its side with a T-shaped symbol that was the brand used by De Tomaso's Argentinean cattle ranching ancestors. The car made its public debut in Modena in March 1970 and was presented at the 1970 New York Motor Show a few weeks later. Approximately a year after that production Pantera's started finding their way into the hands of customers and production had already been ramped up to a remarkable (by the standards of Modena-built exotica) 3 per day.Several modifications were made for the 1972 model year Pantera's. A new 4 Bolt Main Cleveland Engine, also 351 cubic inch, was used with lower compression ratio (from 11:1 to 8.6:1, chiefly to meet US emissions standards and run on lower octane standard fuel) but with more aggressive camshaft timing (in an effort to reclaim some of the power lost through the reduction in compression). Many other engine changes were made, including the use of a factory exhaust header. The Pantera you see here is an 41,000 actual low mileage California car that has been with the same owner for the past 10 years and has only travelled 650 miles in that time period! It is a fantastic example of an exotic looking car with daily driving capabilities. Finished in silver, this car was stripped and painted with DuPont Imron paint in the very recent past and only has very minor imperfections. The paint looks great and has a good luster. The car you see has a very straight and solid body. This Pantera's chrome bumpers were powdercoated black by the previous owner and look great. What little chrome is left on the car looks great with a bright shine and only minor scratching. The undercarriage has been undercoated and shows very well. The spring towers, frame rails and floor pans are all also in excellent condition and solid. Inside this two seater, the interior looks fantastic. The black upholstery shows no notable wear marks. The original dash is still intact and looks great. The carpet and headliner show no wear or staining of any kind and look great. There is no radio installed nor air conditioning but most of the original parts are included. This Pantera is a rear mounted engine car powered by a 351 cubic inch, 4 bolt main Cleveland. The engine is original but received a rebuild about 1,500 miles ago with TRW internals, as stated by the previous owner; however we do not have any receipts in hand. The engine number is 01361 and is capable of 325 horsepower and is able to accelerate 0-60mph in 5.5 seconds, according to Car and Driver magazine. Attached to the Cleveland is a manual transmission. The radiator had the cross flow update and two Spal 750 cfm pusher fans have replaced the original fans. The carburetor was replaced with a new Edlebrock 600 cfm within the last 1,500 miles as well. The front trunk has a newer Optima battery, partial tool kit, jack and spare tire with wheel. The original Pantera wheels are on the car and wrapped in newer tires with a lot of tread life left. The VIN number on this car is THPNMB02371 and the current mileage shows 41,887. This Pantera is being sold on a clean & clear actual mileage California title. GET OUT AND DRIVE!!!
