Description

1972 Detomaso PanteraVin: THPNMC03458- Black on black 72 Pantera- Texas car- Mid-mounted Ford 351 V8 Cleveland Engine- Holley 4-barrel carburator - ZF 5-speed manual transmission with limited-slip differential- Recently restored- Fresh professional black paint job- Lecarra steering wheel- Campagnolo polished wheelsThe car was designed by American designer Tom Tjaarda and replaced the De Tomaso Mangusta. Unlike the Mangusta, which employed a steel backbone chassis, the Pantera was a steel monocoque design, the first instance of De Tomaso using this construction technique. The Pantera logo included a version of Argentina's flag turned on its side with a T-shaped symbol that was the brand used by De Tomaso's Argentinean cattle ranching ancestors. The car made its public debut in Modena March 1970 and was presented at the 1970 New York Motor Show a few weeks later. Approximately a year after that production Pantera's started finding their way into the hands of customers and production had already been ramped up to a remarkable (by the standards of Modena-built exotica) three per day.Several modifications were made for the 1972 model year Pantera. A new 4 Bolt Main Cleveland Engine, also 351 in3, was used with lower compression ratio (from 11:1 to 8.6:1, chiefly to meet US emissions standards and run on lower octane standard fuel) but with more aggressive camshaft timing (in an effort to reclaim some of the power lost through the reduction in compression). Many other engine changes were made, including the use of a factory exhaust header. This '72 Detomaso Pantera is an amazing car that has recently benefited from new paint, new polished Campagnolo style wheels and an extensive engine bay restoration. The gentleman we purchased this car from was a very picky collector who only collects the best examples and it shows with this stunning black on black Pantera. The car was stripped to bare metal and professionally painted. It was blocked after primer, base coated and then cleared. The entire car was then wet sanded and buffed to a glass like deep finish. The paint is nearly perfect with no notable imperfections. Inside, the interior is in great condition and shows only very minimal wear. A Lecarra steering wheel and Sony CD player have been tastefully installed to complete this beautiful black interior. Underneath the carpet has been professionally Dynamated to keep cabin noise and heat to a minimum. The seats, dash and center console all look great as well as the door panels and headliner. Gauges are all in good working order in exception of the fuel gauge. The lights, blinkers, wipers and horn are in working order. The car has recent receipts for aftermarket air conditioning system but currently it does not operate. In the rear, the 351 Cleveland V8 runs great and starts with a turn of the key. The rear engine compartment has recently had an extensive restoration. Coolant lines have been rerouted for a clean overall appearance and the inner fenders have been painted with finished welds. The transmission, valve covers, and intake manifold have been all polished. The 4 Bolt Main Cleveland Engine is fitted with a Holly 4 barrel carburetor and ceramic coated headers. The engine runs very STRONG and the ZF 5-speed gated transmission shifts smoothly and has been polished. All of the polished Campagnolo style wheels are in great condition and are wrapped with Continental 215/50/17 in the front and Continental 285/40/17 in the rear. The current mileage shows 33,105. VIN number is THPNMC03458.Driving Impressions:"We have an extreme soft spot here at Motoexotica for Panteras so I have had the opportunity to drive many different Panteras. This one stands out right away with it's extremely desirable black on black color combo along with the bright contrast of the polished Campagnolo wheels... just flat out sexy and sinister in person this black beast looks absolutely fresh and correct. I climbed into the Pantera and was happy to see the interior appeared extremely clean with a fabulous Lecarra steering wheel installed, I instantly thought "this one was done the right way!"Engine fires right up and and I received a head rush from the 351 Cleveland rumbling right behind my whole body, I guarantee that there is no other car that gives this type of physical vibe and this is just one of many things that make Pantera so special. Immediately driving the Pantera to the local park for photographs, I noticed how tight the car felt overall. The interior noise was much lower than previous Panteras I have driven thanks to the Dynamat but the beautiful exhaust note is now the main focus. At the park I spent more time talking to people driving by the Pantera than photographing it! The attention this black beauty received was overwhelming and this is coming from a person who drives a lot of exotic class cars! The next owner will enjoy the performance, the classic era, and positive attention this car gives!"
