Dan Panoz, the company's president, bought the frame rights (designed by Frank Costin) used in the Irish sports car TMC Costin. A seven-man crew built the first ten cars of this series. Ford manufactured the engines in these modern classics. The Costin chassis was never put under a production car, instead the early Roadsters featured a TIG-welded stainless steel tubing frame, and extensive use of CNC machine and stamped parts.Starting in 1994, the chassis was made with aluminum. This reduced the amount of time made to produce the car and also the weight of the vehicle. An aluminum chassis and body also meant the car will never rust in your lifetime. The top speed of 140-plus mph means you can experience the thrill of racing; the AIV (aluminum-intensive vehicle) can go from 0 to 60 mph in 4.3 seconds. In 1996 Dan Panoz and his father helped create Panoz Motor Sports. It was of utmost importance to them that the same front/mid-engine, rear-wheel drive built for street driving was seen on the track. Panoz competed with Mercedes, Porsche and Ferrari in the 1997 24 Hours of Le Mans. Neither Panoz car submitted in the race finished, but it was impressive for an independent manufacturer to keep up with the established makers. The Panoz Roadster AIV model saw the assembly line for the last time in 1999. This line was succeeded by the Panoz Esperante because at that point in time Federal laws changed, making the Roadster's production no longer possible.MotoeXotica invites you to check out this modern mark in history.
