A Teutonic driver’s car with few direct peers when it was new, MotoeXotica Classic Cars is please to present this 1986 Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.3-16 Cosworth sedan which has been owned and well cared for by the same owner for the past 25 years. We personally love these little sport sedans from Mercedes! These cars came about because Mercedes wanted a hot head for their M102 engine so they could go play in the DTM series. The company commissioned Cosworth, and they designed the deep-breathing four-valve per cylinder head for the Germans it came out of the factory with a dogleg five-speed, much like the transmission that came in the competing BMW M3.

Made in Mercedes’ Bremen, West Germany factory, this car came with the following standard equipment – power front bucket seats, driver’s with memory (codes 222, 241); exterior temperature gauge (code 240); electronic locking differential (code 467); rear audio system (code 519); automatic antenna (code 531); anti-theft system (code 551); and heated rear window (code 593). This particular unit has service notes that started on April 22, 1986 at 1,066 miles and ended on September 10, 1991 at 53,841 miles.

Finished in Black Pearl Metallic (code DB-199), (a.k.a. Blue-Black Metallic, one of only two colors available; the other was Smoke Silver) this car’s paint and trim are in overall very good condition. Styling elements unique to the Cosworth 2.3-16 includes a deeper chin spoiler, side skirts, a rear air dam, and trunk spoilerThe car’s bodywork is straight and solid, the battery appears in very good order and the engine bay is quite tidy. The cargo area is also in very good order and complete with lug wrench, spare tire and the original radio in a box. The body-colored bumpers are in better-than-decent condition. The 190E models also debuted the monowiper, a single blade that swept 86 percent of the glass in a controlled single arc.

Due to their performance, the 16-valve cars were different from the other 190 models. The body kit on the 2.3-16 reduced the drag coefficient to 0.32, one of the lowest CD values on a four-door sedan of the time, while also reducing lift at speed. The steering ratio was quicker and the steering wheel smaller than that on other 190s, while the fuel tank was enlarged from 14.5 to 18.5 gallons. This sport Benz rolls on EVO II wheels with Yokohama radials, size 205/40R17 at all four corners. The OEM 15″ wheels and tires are also included. The EVO alloys are in very good condition overall while the tires are in satisfactory shape. The suspension on 16-valve models is modified from the standard 190. As well as being lower and stiffer, it has quicker dampers, larger anti-roll bars, harder bushings and hydraulic Self-Levelling Suspension (SLS) in the rear. This allowed the rear ride height to remain constant even when the car is fully loaded.

In place of the standard 2.3L SOHC four was the DOHC, 16-valve version, which carried the 2.3-16 tag (code M102) with Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection. The Cosworth engine was based on the M102 eight-valve unit, already fitted to the 190 and E-Class. Cosworth developed the cylinder head. It was made from light alloy using Coscast’s unique casting process, meaning 16 valves were developed to be the “largest that could practically be fitted into the combustion chamber.” In roadgoing US trim, the 2.3L 16-valve engine generated a maximum power output of 167 horsepower at 5,800 rpm and 162 lbs⋅ft of torque at 4,750 rpm with 9.7:1 compression. The oversquare 95.50 x 80.25 mm bore and stroke dimensions ensured that the motor could easily rev to a 7,000 rpm redline. Driver convenience features include – automatic climate control (complete with a new compressor), cruise control, power steering, power four-wheel disc brakes with anti-lock, power windows, power sunroof, power locks, power front bucket seats with two-position memory, power dual sideview mirrors, power antenna and sunroof.

Backing this engine is a Getrag five-speed manual transmission and a standard electronically locking rear differential (code 467). The Getrag five-speed manual gearbox was unique to the 16-valve and featured a ‘racing’ gear pattern with ‘dog-leg’ first gear, left and down from neutral. This meant that the remaining second, third, fourth and fifth gears were in a simple H pattern allowing fast and easy selection. The pattern is also unusual in that the driver engages reverse by shifting left and up from neutral, as for first gear in a conventional pattern. An oil cooler was fitted for the inevitable track use for which many of these cars were destined.

Besides the electronic rear diff, all 2.3-16-valve 190 models were also available with Mercedes’ ASD system. The ASD is an electronically controlled, hydraulically locking differential which activates automatically when required. The electronic control allows varied amounts of differential lock from the standard 15 percent right up to 100 percent. It is not a traction control system, however, and can only maximize traction rather than prevent wheel spin. Activation of the ASD system is indicated by an illuminated amber triangle within the speedometer.

Inside, the car’s Anthracite Leather interior (code 271A) is in overall great shape. The strictly four-seater interior had Recaro sports seats with strong side bolsters for front and rear passengers. Those seats are in very good order while the matching carpet is in satisfactory condition. The headliner is also in very good condition and has a factory sunroof. The four-spoke steering wheel houses the driver’s airbag. The inner door panels look great while the instrument panel is in satisfactory shape. It has the usual Bez full set of gauges plus three extra dials – an oil temperature gauge, stopwatch and voltmeter – at the base of the center console. The center console and shifter are in satisfactory order and rounding out the interior is a Kenwood AM/FM stereo with CD player.

In the late 1970s, Mercedes competed in rallying with the big V-8-powered coupes of the R107 Series, mainly the light-weight Mercedes 450 SLC 5.0. Mercedes wished to take the 190 E rallying and asked British engineering company Cosworth to develop an engine with 320 horsepower for the rally car. This project was known as project WAA by Cosworth. During this time, the Audi Quattro with its all-wheel drive system and a turbocharged was launched, making the 2.3-16V appear outclassed. With a continued desire to compete in motorsports with the 190, and now an engine to do it with, Mercedes turned to the Deutsche Tourenwagen Meisterschaft (DTM) (German Touring Car Championship) motor sport series instead. Cars racing in this championship, however, had to be based on a roadgoing model. Mercedes, therefore, had to put into series production a 190 fitted with a detuned version of the Cosworth engine. This high-performance model was known as the 190 E 2.3-16V and debuted in September at the 1983 Frankfurt Motor Show, after its reputation had already been established. Three cars, only slightly cosmetically altered, set three world records in August at the Nardo testing facility in Italy, recording a combined average speed of 154.06 mph over the 50,000 km endurance test, and establishing 12 international endurance records. The Mercedes 190-E Cosworth was also featured on the second episode in series 15 of the popular car show, “Top Gear.”

The road-going version of the engine was reconfigured with reduced inlet and exhaust port sizes, different camshaft profiles, no dry sump configuration and Bosch K-Jetronic replacing the specialized Kugelfischer fuel injection. The heads for the engines were cast at Cosworth’s Coscast foundry in Worcester, England and sent to Germany to be fitted to the rest of the engine, parts of which were different from the standard 2.3-litre engine, including light pressed alloy pistons, and rings designed to withstand higher engine speeds, while connecting rods, bearings and bearing caps were found to be strong enough to be left unaltered.

Competition to this Cosworth Benz in 1986 included Audi’s 80 (4000) sedan, BMW’s M3 Sedan, Buick’s Century T-Type, Chevrolet Celebrity Eurosport, Chrysler’s LeBaron GTS Turbo, Dodge’s Lancer ES Turbo, Oldsmobile’s Cutlass Ciera GT, Pontiac’s 6000 STE, Saab’s 900 Turbo, Volkswagen’s Jetta GLI and Volvo’s 760 GLE.

Documentation includes original owner’s manual with service stamps from 86-91, original M-B dealer directory, original English chassis catalog, original service and warranty guide, original service warranty policy and original roadside assistance information.
